Balanced Diversity is a Sacramento-based workforce consulting firm specializing in inclusive recruiting, talent strategy, and human-centered workforce solutions for growing organizations.

Branding Challenges for Professional Services Firms

The core branding challenge was translating deep consulting expertise into a clear, credible professional services brand that differentiated the firm in a crowded market.

Establishing a Professional Services Brand After a Franchise Exit

“Part of the reason I became involved with Hummingbird is I’m separating from the franchise and creating my own brand identity,” says Balanced Diversity’s CEO and Founder, Liliana Bernal. “I reached out to them to create the logo and start thinking about my brand and identity—changing my website and so on.”

Bernal had owned the first and only franchise in a company that later decided to move away from the franchise model. As the business transitioned, she realized their values and business methodology no longer aligned.

Like many consulting firms emerging from a franchise or parent brand, Balanced Diversity faced a common professional services branding challenge: establishing a clear, independent identity that accurately reflects its values, expertise, and future direction.

Providing Human-Centered Workforce Solutions

Although Balanced Diversity is now both a recruiting and workforce consulting company, it started as a recruiting firm shortly before COVID.

“The reason I wanted to do something different is our industry is a very commoditized and transactional industry,” Bernal explains. “Yet we’re dealing with very important things in people’s lives—their job, their job satisfaction. We help clients find their talent, which should be highly valued.”

One of her biggest concerns was seeing people treated as numbers rather than individuals with unique capabilities and contributions.

“I really wanted to have a recruiting company that was more individualized,” she says. “That cared more about the individual and cared more about the company as well.”

That philosophy became foundational. Seeing people for who they truly are and providing extra care and attention to both candidates and clients.

Early Growth and the Need for Brand Clarity

When Bernal started the business in February of 2020, the timing was far from ideal.

“Instead of us struggling through COVID, we actually did very well,” she says. “We grew extremely fast. And the biggest reason we grew—especially during COVID—is that people who were looking for work and employers that were looking for people really needed that extra care and attention.”

Balanced Diversity differentiated itself by leading with empathy and individualized care. But rapid growth introduced a new challenge.

“We grew too fast,” Bernal explains. “We hadn’t had the foundation really set.”

As the market slowed post-COVID, the team began asking a critical question: Who are we really?

“That’s when I saw that our business philosophy and strategy didn’t align with the franchisor,” she adds. “They wanted to stay traditional. I wanted to be a disruptor.”

Brand Strategy Starts with Asking the Right Questions

Bernal knew defining the future of the firm meant asking deeper questions: What’s our brand? What’s our story? What’s our why?

At the heart of the answer was a commitment to inclusive workplaces.

“We want to work with companies that understand diversity in their workplace is important,” she says. “If they don’t like our name, then they’re not the right partner for us.”

The partnership with Hummingbird helped translate these values into a clear brand strategy. One that positioned Balanced Diversity to confidently move forward as an independent consulting firm.

“We feel very comfortable standing on our own two feet, under our brand and under our own identity,” Bernal explains.

Brand Positioning for the Current Market

“The workplace has completely changed since COVID,” Bernal says. “What employers are looking for and what employees are looking for is very different.”

For Balanced Diversity, that shift meant moving away from transactional recruiting toward workforce consulting. Instead of recruiters, the firm now positions its team as workforce consultants offering strategic workforce planning and inclusive talent solutions.

“When we’re helping someone find a job, we see them for who they are and where they’re best suited,” Bernal says. “We do the same thing for our clients.”

A boutique service with big-company experience defines the firm’s approach. “What matters most is that we do what we say we’re going to do—and we do it with empathy and integrity.”

From Thought Leadership to Proven Expertise

Over the past year, Balanced Diversity has invested heavily in thought leadership.

“Everything we put out is about sharing our expertise and what we’re seeing in the workplace,” Bernal says. “It’s honest and grounded in reality.”

That expertise shows up most clearly in outcomes—successful placements and long-term relationships.

“There’s nothing better than hearing, ‘You found us the perfect employee,’ or ‘You found me the perfect job,’” she adds.

The firm is now expanding workforce consulting services and launching an AI agent to meet evolving market needs.

“We don’t want to be seen as recruitment support,” Bernal says. “We want to be seen as an expert.”
